Huawei’s P20 Pro takes even better night pictures than the Pixel 2 XL

Image
Huawei’s night mode is spectacular. Roughly half of Huawei’s P20 Pro launch event this week was dedicated to the new device’s camera capabilities, reflecting the great deal of time and attention the company has dedicated to mobile photography. And the results, now that I’ve had a few days to try out the P20 Pro, aren’t far off from the lofty hype. Huawei has crafted a formidable contender for the crown of best smartphone camera. I’m not yet convinced that it deserves that accolade, but I can say with certainty that the P20 Pro’s night mode is a groundbreaking innovation that produces some of the best night shots ever taken with a phone. Even the lauded Google Pixel 2 XL struggles to keep up with the P20 Pro. Touring around the city of Paris, the venue of Huawei’s P20 announcement, I shot a bunch of casual photos with the Pixel 2 XL and the P20 Pro. Below you’ll find a selection of the most notable ones, starting off with the most challenging situation: nighttime phot...

Image
New York City will offer free cyber security tools to the public as part of a new effort to improve online safety, officials said on Thursday, a week after Atlanta was hit with a ransomware attack that knocked some municipal systems offline. The program, dubbed NYC Secure, will launch a free smartphone protection app to warn users when suspicious activity is detected on their devices, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced at a news conference. "New Yorkers aren't safe online. We can't wait around for other levels of government to do something about it or the private sector," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The program will cost the city about $5 million per year, he said. "It's our job in government to make sure that people are safe online. It's a new reality," de Blasio said. City agencies will also beef up security protection on public Wi-Fi ...

Tesla recalls 123,000 cars for power steering fix

Image
SAN FRANCISCO: Tesla on Thursday issued a voluntary recall of 123,000 Model S cars to replace a power steering bolt that could corrode due to salt used on winter roads. No accidents or injuries have been caused by a flaw that prompted the decision to replace the part in all Model S vehicles built before April of 2016, according to the Silicon Valley-based company. "If the bolts fail, the driver is still able to steer the car, but increased force is required due to loss or reduction of power assist," Tesla said in an email to Model S owners whose cars are impacted by the recall. "This primarily makes the car harder to drive at low speeds and for parallel parking, but does not materially affect control at high speed, where only small steering wheel force is needed." No other Tesla models were involved in the recall. The corrosion has only been noticed in places wh...

How Indian-origin billionaire plans to beat Tesla

Image
British billionaire  Sanjeev Gupta  has revealed plans to build the world's biggest  lithium ion battery  in South Australia. South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said that the battery would benefit the broader community, Xinhua news agency reported. "We know that more renewable energy means cheaper power, and that's why we have increased our renewable energy target to 75 per cent and also introduced a new renewable storage target of 25 per cent," Weatherill told reporters in Adelaide on Friday. "These targets will accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewables and lower bills for South Australians." Since its completion in December 2017,  Tesla 's South Australia battery has surpassed expectations, regularly supplementing the state's power grid to prevent widespread blackouts. The planned 120 megawatts (MW)/140 megawatt hours (MWh) storage capacity of Gupta's Liberty House is larger than that of the current record holder, built...

iOS 11 bugs are so common they now appear in Apple ads

Blink and you’ll miss it If you blink during Apple’s latest iPhone ad, you might miss a weird little animation bug. It’s right at the end of a slickly produced commercial, where the text from an iMessage escapes the animated bubble it’s supposed to stay inside. It’s a minor issue and easy to brush off, but the fact it’s captured in such a high profile ad just further highlights Apple’s many bugs in iOS 11. 9to5Mac  writer Benjamin Mayo  spotted the bug  in Apple’s latest ad, and he’s clearly surprised “that this was signed off for the commercial,” especially as he  highlighted it months ago  and has filed a bug report with Apple. It’s just one of many quirks in iOS 11, including strange UI problems in the Music app, regularly  misaligned text in the App Store ,  vanishing docks , and rotation issues. It’s easy to dismiss all of these small problems because they’re not the types of  Apple security bugs  that have hit the headlines r...

Oculus Go standalone VR headset rumored to launch at F8 developer conference

Image
Facebook is reportedly planning to launch its Oculus Go standalone virtual reality (VR) headset at the company’s F8 developer conference this year.  Variety  reports  that the VR headset is likely to make its debut at F8 in May, alongside Facebook’s promise of “the biggest AR / VR news from Facebook to date.” Oculus  first unveiled its new standalone VR headset  back in October, which will be priced at $199 once it ships. The Go is designed to be a standalone headset that will sit in-between the $129 Gear VR and the $499, without inside-out tracking or fully tracked motion controllers. The  Oculus Go will be built by Xiaomi  and has a Snapdragon 821 processor inside. Recent leaks suggest the base $199 model will include 32GB of storage, while a 64GB model will also be available at a higher price. Oculus is also working on a headset codenamed Santa Cruz, which is a standalone prototype with tracking. HTC recently unveiled its Vive Pro, a higher-r...
